A Remedy to Soften
Mullein • Dziewanna
Verbascum thapsus
Let’s talk about Mullein. It’s an European plant that has made its way all over the world.
This beautiful member of Snapdragon family has big fuzzy leaves that clearly represents Cilia, a tiny finger like hair on the surface of airway cells. Those tiny projections help move mucus up and out of the lungs. Mullein medicine works strongly on respiratory tract. Great when used for dry coughs that resemble bronchitis.
The plant itself grows up to the sky that also mimics our spine. Many teachers use mullein root for muscular skeletal injuries.
The bright yellow flowers that grow on the top of the plant are strong medicine in a form of oil used for ear infections in kids and adults.
Mullein grows in a rocky, hard environment. I think of this plant as a remedy to soften. Soften what became hard. I’ve seen this plant helping with harshness and stagnation within the heart.
In Chinese medicine lungs relate to grief. Unprocessed, unresolved grief can close our heart and build a wall thats not easy to remove. The softness and gentleness of this fairylike leaves of mullein can bring healing to the lungs and help soften the trauma around our hearts.
There are lot of folk stories about Mullein. It was used as a form of protection in many traditions. “If one beareth with him one twig of this wort, he will not be terrified with any awe, nor will a wild beast hurt him, or any evil coming near”.
A dry stalk was literally lit and carried as light source, physically and energetically dissolving the darkness.
There is a myth that Odysseus used Mullein to protect himself from Circe.
In European folklore the plant was used to find out who’s truly in love with you. It was said that behavior of the plant indicates the intentions of the beloved.
