Scents from Childhood

Sage • Szałwia

Salvia officinalis

Sage was known in folk tradition for its strong love toward the throat and head. When there was a cold or flu within the household, infusions of sage were brewed, oils were rubbed into the foreheads and smudges were burned.

Sometimes I feel the potency of this medicine is lowered only to its flavor in cooking. This remedy is known for being antispasmodic and astringent. It’s super helpful in the early stages of cold and flu, helps with sinus congestion inflammatory, diarrhea, and headaches.

The smell of sage always reminds me of my childhood. Since I was a child I always had problems with my throat and tonsils. The moment any problems with tonsillitis arose, my mom brewed me a hot infusion with sage and I gargled my throat religiously.

I love to make a tea from dried sage with a spoon of honey and squeezed lemon. I drink it anytime sore throat arises.

When I don’t catch the soreness at the right time I go for a sage gargle.
Here is a fresh Sage picked from the garden soaking, getting ready to be turned into a gargle remedy.
